What is a sublimation jersey?

The short meaning, the science in plain words, and how to tell a sublimated jersey from a printed or embroidered one.

Updated 18 Oct 2026
A sublimation jersey is a polyester jersey printed by sublimation: the design is printed on transfer paper with special ink, then heat-pressed at around 190 to 200 °C so the ink turns into a gas and bonds with the polyester fibres. The print becomes part of the fabric, so it does not crack, peel or feel heavy.

Sublimation in plain words

Sublimation is when a solid turns straight into a gas without becoming liquid first. Sublimation ink behaves this way under heat. When the printed paper is pressed onto polyester, the heat opens the fibres, the ink turns to gas and enters them, and as it cools the colour is locked inside the fibre.

How to recognise one

  • You cannot feel the print. Run your hand over it; it feels like plain fabric.
  • Colours run edge to edge and across seams, often with gradients and patterns.
  • The fabric is polyester, usually light and breathable.
  • Names and numbers are part of the fabric, not a layer on top.

What you need to make sublimation jerseys

ItemWhat it does
Polyester fabricWhite or light, 100% polyester or a high-polyester blend; the ink only bonds with polyester
Sublimation printer and inkWide-format inkjet loaded with sublimation (dye) ink
Sublimation paperHolds the ink until it is pressed
RIP softwareManages colour profiles, mirroring and nesting on the roll
Heat press or calenderTransfers the print at around 190 to 200 °C
Design softwareCorelDRAW or similar, for the artwork and each player's name and number

Limits of sublimation

  • Only light fabrics: sublimation ink is transparent, so it cannot print white or light colours onto dark fabric.
  • Only polyester: cotton does not take the dye.
  • White creases: if the fabric folds during pressing, a white line can appear where the ink did not reach.
  • Colour matching needs a profile: the screen colour and the fabric colour differ until the RIP profile is set up.

Why teams choose sublimation

For team wear, the main reason is that personalisation is free: every player's name and number is printed in the same pass as the design. That is also why artwork becomes the bottleneck in sublimation shops, because every player needs their own file.

Questions

What does sublimation mean in a jersey?

It means the design was printed onto transfer paper with sublimation ink and then heat-pressed into polyester fabric, where the ink turns into a gas and bonds with the fibres.

Is a sublimation jersey good quality?

For team wear, yes. The print does not crack, peel or fade quickly, the fabric stays breathable, and any design or colour costs the same to print.

Can sublimation be done on cotton?

Not well. Sublimation needs polyester or a high-polyester blend. On cotton the colours wash out.

What is full sublimation?

The whole garment, edge to edge, is printed, including the background colour, pattern, names and numbers.
