Putting names on jerseys without mistakes

Every reprint costs fabric, ink and a day. These checks catch most errors before anything is printed.

Updated 18 Oct 2026
Most jersey name mistakes come from retyping lists, unclear sizes and late changes. Work only from a typed roster the customer has confirmed, check duplicate numbers and missing sizes before artwork, generate names from the sheet rather than typing them, and compare each finished jersey with the roster when packing.

Before artwork

  • Get the roster as a spreadsheet, one row per player. (Free template)
  • Check for duplicate numbers and rows without sizes.
  • Agree name style: capitals, initials, surname only.
  • Send the cleaned sheet back and get a written OK on WhatsApp or email.

During artwork

  • Do not retype names. Copy them from the sheet, or let a tool fill them from it.
  • Check the longest name on the smallest size. (Name width calculator)
  • Name every file by size and player so the operator never guesses.

Before printing

  • Count pieces per size and compare with the roster. (Size counter)
  • Send a proof of two or three players, including the longest name.
  • Check mirroring once, in the RIP or the file, not both.

When packing

  • Pack by player or by size, matching how the customer will hand them out.
  • Tick each jersey off against the roster.

Why automation helps

Typing errors disappear when names are never typed. With AJILE, names, numbers and sizes come straight from the confirmed sheet into each player's file, and file names carry the size and player, so the checks above take minutes rather than an afternoon.

Questions

What is the most common jersey name mistake?

Spelling errors from retyping a handwritten or photographed list. Working from a typed spreadsheet the customer confirmed removes most of them.

How do I catch duplicate numbers?

Sort the roster by number, or paste it into a duplicate checker such as our free roster template, before artwork starts.

Who is responsible for spelling?

Agree in writing that the customer confirms the roster. Then any error in the confirmed sheet is theirs, not the shop's.
